Summer Tips: Beat the Heat
Summer has arrived and it’s already getting warmer outside. Today, in New Jersey, the high is expected to be 88 degrees. For me, the greatest things about summer are the fun outdoor activities like concerts on a lawn, camping, swimming, and just hanging out in the backyard with my family and friends.
As much as I enjoy summer, I often find myself concerned about how my bathing suit will look (of course!), putting on enough sunscreen (especially on my daughter) and staying hydrated. Although I worry about these things, I know people with diabetes have a lot more to take into consideration. A few weeks ago, I came across an article from the Mayo Clinic about summer tips for people with diabetes and wanted to be sure and share them with you.
Helpful Summer Tips from Mayo Clinic
- Check blood sugar levels frequently throughout the day, especially during exercise, since blood sugars may fluctuate.
- Transport diabetes supplies and medications in an insulated bag protected by a cold pack – avoid freezing. (Be sure to review the proper storage of your specific diabetes medications and supplies, especially in extreme weather conditions, such as hot weather.)
- Avoid exercising in the heat, choose an air-conditioned place instead.
- Wear light colored clothing made of fabrics that can breathe.
- Protect your feet – never walk barefoot on hot surfaces.
- Watch for signs of possible heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, fainting or excessive sweating. Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms.
- Maintain adequate hydration, avoiding caffeinated or alcoholic beverages that can be dehydrating.
